Fort Jackson commander facing adultery charges

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Army says the commanding general of Fort Jackson, S.C., has been suspended in connection with charges of adultery and involvement in a physical altercation.

The Army says Brig. Gen. Bryan Roberts reportedly was in an altercation with another woman, not his wife. Roberts was suspended from his job by Gen. Robert W. Cone, commander of Army Training and Doctrine Command, while the investigation continues.

Roberts took command of Fort Jackson in April 2012.

He has been in the Army for about 29 years and served as the director of Iraq training and advisory teams before taking the Fort Jackson post.

The suspension is the latest in a series of scandals involving senior military officers in recent months.

Brig. Gen. Peggy Combs will serve as interim commander during the investigation.

Microsoft's next Xbox: The rumor roundup

DNP Microsoft's Next Xbox the rumor roundup

It's been eight years since Microsoft and Sony announced new consoles, and tastes have changed considerably. Back then, new gaming gear was launched at E3, or using Elijah Wood-fronted MTV specials, but this time around Microsoft is pitching a tent on its Redmond campus for the world's media to huddle under. With less than 24 hours before the next Xbox is revealed, it's high time we sifted through the leaks, rumors and prognostications to see what we know, or at least, what we think we know about a little box called "Durango."

Turkey to increase $1 bln credit line to Egypt by $250 mln : Deputy PM

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Two Pakistani ministers in charge of water and power explained what can be done to end power cuts of up to 20 hours a day in parts of the country enduring temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius and above - absolutely nothing, it seems, except raise prices. The power shortages have sparked violent protests and crippled key industries, costing hundreds of thousands of jobs in a country already beset by high unemployment, a failing economy, widespread poverty and a Taliban insurgency. ...

Visteon's HABIT is a concept infotainment system that puts road trip copilots out of a job (video)

Visteon's incar HABIT concept infotainment system puts road trip copilots out of a job

A good acronym also hints at what it does, and Visteon's new intelligent in-car concept, HABIT, is a good example of that. The Human Bayesian Intelligence Technology system -- to give it its full name -- learns the behaviour of drivers so it can automatically change the temperature, heat the seats and drop that Biohazard album just when you need it most. Factors such as weather, time of day and real-time road conditions all play a part, plus, of course a log of all your typical in-car interactions. It promises to go above just warming your behind on a cold morning though, offering intelligence that would be able to divine local radio stations that play your kind of jam when you're out of town. It could also seamlessly mix these with your local / tablet / smartphone library and internet sources. Sound a little too creepy? Wait until you see the computer-generated demo video presenter past the break.

Kanye's 'SNL' Performance Includes 'New Slaves' & 'Black Skinhead'

Kanye Snl Performance

Kanye West performed on "SNL."

Kanye West hit "Saturday Night Live" this weekend for a performance of two tracks. The rapper was the musical guest on Saturday night's episode, hosted by Ben Affleck.

West took the stage to perform "New Slaves" and "Black Skinhead" during the episode. Censors seemed to miss a number of choice words, as West was audibly heard using the n-word during both songs.

The performance was the second big Kanye stunt in as many days. The 35-year-old rapper premiered "New Slaves," by projecting audio and video for the song on the sides of buildings across the world.

At a recent performance, West shot down rumors that he would participate in a sketch on the show. "Someone asked me, 'When you do 'SNL,' are you going to do a skit about the paparazzi and humanize yourself?'" West said during the show on Wednesday, referencing a recent run-in with the paparazzi. "What the f--k do I have to apologize for? When did I become inhuman? Or was it them demonizing me and harassing me that made me less than human?"

The episode also marked the end of cast member Bill Hader's run with the program. The season finale was Hader's last episode of "SNL," after eight years on the show.

Lawyer for accused singer: steroids had ill effect

VISTA, Calif. (AP) ? The lawyer for a California heavy metal singer accused of trying to hire someone to kill his estranged wife says the singer's mind has been ravaged by steroid use.

U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/16EWVKZ) reports that the detail came to light during a Friday hearing for 32-year-old Timothy Lambesis, who has pleaded not guilty to solicitation for murder. A judge at the hearing reduced Lambesis' bail from $3 million to $2 million.

Prosecutors say Lambesis, frontman for Grammy-winning band "As I Lay Dying," paid $1,000 cash to an undercover detective posing as a hitman and gave instructions on how best to kill his wife.

Lambesis' attorney Thomas Warwick said in court that his client had gotten into body building and steroid use. He said Lambesis' thoughts were "devastatingly affected" by the drugs.

D. Wayne Lukas' Preakness Win Gives Him Triple Crown Record: Column

BALTIMORE -- The old guy still gets up crack-of-dawn early.

Not because D. Wayne Lukas has something left to prove, or anything more to gain. He already has it all: Fame, fortune, a bronze plaque in the Hall of Fame and ? after lightly-regarded Oxbow stunned Orb on Saturday at the Preakness ? he has the top spot in the Triple Crown trainer's record book, too, passing "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons with No. 14.

"It's been a while," Lukas chuckled, "but it never gets old.

"I ran last with the first horse I started. The second one doesn't even finish," he added a moment later. "What a roller coaster."

Lukas was thoroughbred racing's first organization man, a former Wisconsin high school basketball coach who brought the principle of "flooding the zone" from the court to the race track.

When he cracked the big time with a horse named Codex at the Preakness in 1980, fans of the sport still thought of it as art, but Lukas relied on cold-blood science. The top trainers at the time were folksy guys like Woody Stephens and wise-cracking Charlie Whittingham, but Lukas was undeniably corporate.

The gravel outside his barns was always perfectly raked, his buttoned-down shirts pressed to match. While his more famous rivals focused on one or two quality horses, Lukas overwhelmed the game with quantity, setting up cookie-cutter operations in dozens of barns from coast to coast and bringing three, four and sometimes even five mounts to the Kentucky Derby.

By the mid-1990s, he perfected the approach, at one point winning six Triple Crown races in a row with four different horses. He shuffled jockeys like a deck of cards and balanced the competing demands of those owners, all the while never taking his eye off the ball or the business. But then rivals like Bob Baffert and disciple Todd Pletcher, who borrowed liberally from Lukas' playbook, began stealing his thunder.

Now 77, Lukas hadn't won a Triple Crown race since 2000 and became a sort of eminence grise, holding court regularly outside his barn at the classic races, more charming than competitive. His return to Derby year after year, despite not having a real shot to win it, became a kind of running joke.

Just two weeks ago at Churchill Downs, Lukas poked fun at himself on that very topic. When someone reminded him he'd brought 44 horses to the Derby ? a race he'd last won with Charismatic in 1999 ? he laughed and said, "I lied to you; 35 of `em I didn't want to run."

Yet Lukas never lost his zeal. He's still the first trainer up on a horse and out on the track in the morning, and every bit as gracious as always. While the entire sport was focused on Orb, trainer Shug McGaughey and the potential to see the sport's first Triple Crown winner in 36 years, Lukas sidled up to him two mornings ago and said "We got another one on the agenda."

Standing outside his barn in shirt sleeves, McGaughey told the tale after getting beat, without being entirely sure whether that encouraging bit about another big win was meant for him or for Lukas himself. Either way, McGaughey was hard-pressed to think of someone more deserving. That sentiment rippled through the trainers' ranks.

"We were out of it early," said Baffert, who became a close of pal of Lukas' over the last few years, "and after it was clear Orb couldn't win it, we all got behind Wayne and (jockey) Gary Stevens."

That part of this win will go largely unnoticed by some, but not Stevens. At 50, the jockey now has nine Triple Crown wins on his resume ? three at each of the classics ? but Stevens was out of the sport for seven years. In a nice bit of symmetry, Lukas gave Stevens his first Triple Crown-winning mount with Winning Colors.

"Wayne put me on the map," Stevens recalled. "When you win that first classic, your phone starts ringing, people want you. ... This is super, super sweet and it happened for the right guy."

Not long after, the "right guy" was asked about his travel plans for Oxbow, who's likely headed for the Belmont after a stop at Churchill Downs.

"4:30 tomorrow morning," Lukas announced, "if you want to watch him load on that van. My truck driver and I will get in that big old truck, and we'll head down the road and make about two Wendy's stops on the way and be in Louisville, Ky., but 5:30 tomorrow night.

As a few reporters rolled their eyes, Lukas continued, "Some of us in this great nation get up and get after in the morning. Others sleep in."

None of that would have surprised Baffert, or any of the other members of the fraternity.

"Wayne loves it so much, when he goes, I'm pretty sure we're going to find him lying in the shed row one morning and holler, `Hey Wayne, why are you sleeping?'"

Witnesses: Car drives into crowd at Va. parade

(AP) ? Witnesses in southwestern Virginia said a car drove into a crowd at a parade Saturday and hurt several people, but the nature of their injuries wasn't immediately known.

It happened around 2:30 p.m. during the Hikers Parade at the Trail Days festival, an annual celebration of the Appalachian Trail in Damascus, a small mountain town near the Tennessee state line about a half-hour drive east of Bristol.

A call to Damascus police was handled by the Washington County Sheriff's Office. A sheriff's dispatcher said she had no immediate information. State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says troopers have been sent to the scene but she had no further information. She said Damascus police were handling the release of information.

Four helicopters arrived to airlift victims to area hospitals. An emergency room worker at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon said she didn't have any information before hanging up.

What caused the car to drive into the crowd wasn't immediately known. It appeared to come from a side street, and a thud could be heard. People yelled stop, and at some point, the car finally stopped.

Witnesses said the car had a handicapped parking sticker and it went more than 100 feet before coming to a stop.

"He was hitting hikers," said Vickie Harmon, a witness from Damascus. "I saw hikers just go everywhere."

Damascus resident Amanda Puckett, who was watching the parade with her children, ran to the car, where she and others lifted the car off those pinned underneath.

"Everybody just threw our hands up on the car and we just lifted the car up," she said.

There were ambulances in the parade ahead of the hikers and paramedics on board immediately responded to the crash.

It's Toc Toc time! | Algarve Blog

Sometimes you are spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out ? particularly on the Algarve and especially in Ferragudo. There are so many good restaurants out there ? it can be hard to decide where to go ? and many people don?t stray far from the main square in a town.

Which is a real shame! Often the local places, tucked away on a side street or back road, can be fantastic ? serving good hearty traditional food without the tourist price tag. And often the least impressive looking building can hide a real gem inside ? which is pretty much how we view Toc Toc in Ferragudo.

Toc Toc restaurant

Don?t be fooled by the location and the take away entrance ? behind this lies a newly renovated and charming little restaurant ? serving amazing and authentic Portuguese cuisine. Run by Silvia and Luis, it?s a real family affair, and the decor is now much more suited to its clever and inviting Portuguese menu. The eagle-eyed amongst you might even recognise two of my paintings on their wall ? I was delighted to support their newly decorated venue when they asked me.

Toc Toc restaurant frango piri piriLunchtime ?Prato do dia? is only 7.50 Euros ? for a main course, pudding, drink and coffee ? and even a choice of three different main courses. We have eaten here so many times and every time the food is well cooked and delicious ? and amazing value!

Toc Toc ribs

Their new evening menu now includes wild boar and venison and gives you the chance to try something different. Silvia is always trying out new dishes too ? this week was the turn of razor clam rice ? which sounds delicious!

Toc Toc restaurant?I?ve saved the best until last though ? their desserts are simply gorgeous ? and their caramel mousse and arroz doce (rice pudding) are simply the best I have eaten anywhere. A recent addition to the dessert menu is a very nice coffee and lemon dessert ? very refreshing and full of flavour. I?d post up a picture of a dessert if I could ? but I always tuck in too quickly to remember to take a picture first!

The last time I was there a diner at another table started laughing at me when my ?baba de camelo? arrived as I squealed with glee ? which they thought was very funny! And yes, if you are there and you see someone literally wiping the bowl clean ? that?ll probably be me!!

Toc Toc are open from 1215 ? 1500 and again from 1900 ? 2230 and they are closed on Mondays. They also accept reservations. If you drive into Ferragudo from the N125 direction they are on the main road on the left opposite the children?s play area.

And if you?re wondering why they are called Toc Toc ? it means ?knock knock? ? to knock on the door ? and a definite invitation to come in and try something authentic and delicious. They also have the take-away too ? hence the telephone in their logo!

Toc Toc restaurant

You can find out more about them on their website Toc Toc or their Facebook page?which also lists the Prato do Dia each day.

Toc Toc table

This is an independent review ?we personally know and love this place ? I don?t accept advertising on this blog, so you can be sure that everything reviewed on here is genuine ? and that we have really been there to eat ? in this case ? often!!

Carbon in a twirl: The science behind a self-assembled nano-carbon helix

May 16, 2013 ? Nanotechnology draws on the fabrication of nanostructures. Scientists have now succeeded in growing a unique carbon structure at the nanoscale that resembles a tiny twirled moustache.

Their method might lead the way to the formation of more complex nano-networks. Researchers of the Electronic Properties of Materials Group at the Faculty of Physics (University of Vienna) and their international collaborators have published their results in the new open access journal of the Nature Publishing group, Scientific Reports.

Nanomaterials exhibit unique properties that can only unfold when the structures of the material are very small -- that is, at the nanoscale. In order to exploit these special properties such as, for example, specific quantum effects it is very important to produce predefined nanostructures in a controlled way and interpret the formation of their shape. Scientists try to understand how to initiate and control the growth of nanomaterials and are exploring different ways to design and build up nanostructures with fine control over shapes. In nature, many organic forms grow bilaterally, that is, symmetrically in two distinct directions. An international team of researchers from the University of Vienna (Austria), the University of Surrey (UK) and the IFW Dresden (Germany) have now achieved such a bilateral formation of inorganic nanomaterials in a controlled environment by implementing a new method.

How to grow a nanomoustache

The scientists pressurized a gas consisting of carbon and iron atoms at an elevated temperature until they observed two arms of carbon atoms spontaneously started growing out of an iron core. When the iron core was small enough, the two carbon arms started spiraling at their ends so that the whole nanostructure bore a striking resemblance with a twirled moustache. "The encouraging insights we gained from our experiments provide a very good starting point for the controlled production of extraordinary new materials with designed nanostructures," expects Dr. Hidetsugu Shiozawa, leading author of the scientific publication and researcher at the Faculty of Physics at the University of Vienna.

Useful imperfections

In order to find out more about the internal architecture of the nanomoustaches, the researchers cut their nanomaterial into extremely thin slices and used a special microscopy technique -- the transmission electron microscopy -- to have a closer look at the slices. When nanostructures grow, structural imperfections of the material emerge that are characteristic for the way the material was formed. In the observed herringbone pattern of the sliced nanomoustache, the distribution of the structural imperfections allowed the scientists to look back in time and extract further information about the formation of the nanomaterial. For future applications it will be fundamental to apply their knowledge to the growth of nanostructures in 2 or 3 dimensions in order to build regular patterns and networks at the nanoscale. Therefore, the scientists strive to understand even more about the mechanism behind the formation pattern of the nanomoustaches and are aiming at growing more dimensional and more complex nanostructures in future research projects.

Oh, baby! Kimmel spoofs 'Bachelor' with toddlers

TV

While "Jimmy Kimmel Live" isn't necessarily known for its sweet approach to babies or children (Kimmel routinely exhorts parents to prank their kids and capture it on camera for yuks), on Thursday night he managed to blend a spoof of "The Bachelor/The Bachelorette" with a clutch of toddler actors that was, well, downright adorable.

In a spoof of the long-running ABC reality series "The Bachelor," Kimmel lent his voice to a "preview" of a "new" series, "The Baby Bachelor," in which Wesley, a very young man just looking for a play date has to choose between a collection of similarly youthful ladies. And they're just as much of a handful as their grown-up counterparts, as demonstrated by the lovely blonde who just can't stop crying. Wesley not only gives her a hug but a peck on the cheek, to no avail.

Women!

Then of course there's always one: 35-month-old Jesse is a "stay-at-home daughter" who is "looking for a sugar daddy."

Who will accept Wesley's offer of a dinosaur toy? Check out the video for all of the cute overload!

Did Google Just Try to Totally Change How Search Works?

Google might have just added a huge feature to Search. It's trying to make it conversational.

The first big search move that Google announced today at I/O was to make it more personal, so you can search for things like "my flight to london" and get information for your upcoming flight to London. Naturally. Like Google Now already does, but for search.

More impressive, though, is Google's push towards conversational search for PC or mobile devices, so you can just say, "OK Google, find a restaurant near my next appointment" and it'll go off and do that. The promise of Siri finally realized. Hugely ambitious, powered by Knowledge Graph information to answer these questions.

More practically, you'd be asking for things like seafood restaurants near a neighborhood you're looking for, or photos near a landmark you're interested in visiting. Or even how tall you have to be to ride a ride. Obviously, this is something we've been hoping for years, but never quite gotten right. There's just too much context needed, too much advanced language recognition, too much computation. And yet that's exactly what Google demonstrated today.

We're still skeptical you'll be able to use it quite like in the live stage demos, but what we saw was pretty darned impressive. At the very least, it's startling as a proof of concept.

Google's conversational search also works to send emails to individual contacts, even by just their first name. In one Google demo, an employee sent an email to a full contact, with a first and last name, just by the user saying "Send an email to Katie," because it knew that's who was meant.

Google Now has improved as well; it got some new cards, for reminders, public transit, music albums, or TV shows. All pretty great. It's trying to anticipate what you want to know, before you remember you want to know. You can also set reminders (a new feature) for Google Now by voice for individual contacts as well.

Obviously, conversational search has a long way to go, no matter how impressive it looks in demos. But natural, conversational language is what we were promised two years ago by Apple, and we were left in the cold. It's still something that's tremendously enticing?who doesn't want Tony Stark's J.A.R.V.I.S. at their beck and call??and this looks like it could be a huge step toward that. Jarvis, tell Pepper we might be late tonight.

Google launches All Access music-streaming service in the US: $9.99 monthly fee

And now, one of the most anticipated I/O announcements. As rumored, Google has been working toward the launch of its own music-streaming service, and the official unveiling came today. Dubbed Google Play Music All Access, the product has a strong focus on personalized recommendations via the so-called Explore feature. As with Spotify and other services, All Access will let you start a radio station while listening to a particular track, and in-depth tweaking controls allow you to nix songs that don't suit your fancy. Another feature demoed onstage is Listen Now, which highlights new releases and content Google thinks you'll enjoy.

As anticipated, All Access will require a monthly fee. A subscription costs $9.99 in the US, and all users will get a 30-day free trial. The service is launching stateside today, and if you sign up before June 30th, you'll get $2 off the monthly fee. We'll be taking All Access for a test drive as soon as possible -- check back for our initial impressions.
